Since Avatar was released in theaters a few weeks ago, all I’ve heard were great reviews. I must admit that most of my friends are fellow techies with a flare for science fiction, but a large portion of my other friends liked it as well. I was unable to get a ticket at Lincoln Square for the IMAX 3D experience because all tickets were sold out for the entire New Year’s Eve weekend up until the 10:20pm showing on Sunday night. I broke down and had one of my friends drive us up to New Rochelle, NY where they now have an IMAX 3D theater in a small section called New Roc City.
The film is set in the year 2154 on Pandora, a fictional world in a distant planetary system. Humans are engaged in mining Pandora’s reserves of a precious mineral, while the Na’vi—a race of indigenous humanoids—resist the colonists’ expansion, which threatens the continued existence of the Na’vi and the Earth-like Pandoran ecosystem. The cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. With a budget of $237 million, it’s gross revenue has already reached $1.13 billion globally. I’m sure with this kind of a hit, he already has plans to start on the sequel.
After sitting through an unnoticeable 162 minutes, I couldn’t believe it was over. I thought the movie amazing! Watching it in 3D, I was awe struck with the details in graphics, the well developed storyline, and the graphics. Did I mention how great the graphics were? I feel that you would be doing yourself a great disservice if you attempt to watch Avatar in any format other than IMAX 3D. James Cameron sets a whole new bar for future sci-fi movies. My only comparison would be to when The Matrix first came out and everyone was raving about it’s fighting choreography and special effects. I plan to go see it for a second time next month at Lincoln Square. I can’t wait to see everyone else try and top this, or for Cameron to exceed himself with his next great hit.
