Andrew Cuomo and David Paterson
Just last week, the former New York State police chief Harry Corbitt, announced his retirement amid the growing scandal involving himself, Governor Paterson, and the governor’s aide. Yesterday Corbitt’s replacement, the acting superintendent Pedro J. Perez, also publicly announced his retirement as well. Based on my astute mathematical skills, that means we just lost two senior NYS police officials in two weeks.

Since the scandal was revealed, rumors have spread like wildfire and many have called for the governor’s resignation as well. All we know now is that the NYS police intervened in a domestic abuse case involving the governor’s aide, David Johnson. Whether or not the action or actions taken by the police may be construed as obstruction of justice, is up to Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo. He is currently investigating the actions of the State Police, Mr. Paterson and members of his administration.

In a letter to Governor Paterson, Mr. Perez mentioned that his reason for retirement is not related to the scandal. He was leaving because it was clear that the administration wanted someone else to lead the agency. The two unions representing the troopers, planned to announce their withdrawal of support for Mr. Perez this week. They made it clear that his role in the domestic violence case was the main reason.
