McSorley's Old Ale House
Tomorrow would be a really bad day to drive through Manhattan. Although everyone would be in high spirits, traffic will be a nightmare with closed streets for the parade, drunk driver checkpoints, and tipsy pedestrians. If you plan to take mass transit, by all means enjoy yourself and try not to miss the St. Patrick’s Day parade running up 5th avenue.

The 2010 parade will begin at 11am, starting at 44th street and traveling all the way up 5th avenue, ending at 86th street. The NYPD is warning everyone not to bring alcohol to the parade or it will be confiscated. Alcohol consumption during the parade is prohibited and persons found with it may be subject to summons and/or arrest.

The following locations also fall under this “no alcohol allowed rule:”

  • Port Authority Bus Terminal
  • Staten Island Ferry Terminals
  • Grand Central Station
  • Penn Station
  • Central Park

I understand they’re trying to keep us safe, but they really taking the life out of the party…

Venue Suggestion

If you’re in town on vacation or just decided to take the day off, I’d suggest dropping by McSorley’s Old Ale House in the East Village. The oldest Irish tavern in New York City was a “men only” bar, since it opened in the 1850′s, only opening it to women in 1970 because of a court order.

On St. Patrick’s Day every year, you can find people beginning line up outside the bar at 6am to 7am in the morning. Once you arrive, you will have the choice between either a light or dark ale, nothing else. The walls will have newspaper articles, floors covered in sawdust, it will be an authentic old world Irish tavern experience. If you’re looking more for a lounge or club atmosphere, where women wear revealing clothes, McSorley’s is not your cup of tea.
