Spencer Tunick - Barcelona
Spencer Tunick is an American artist known for taking group photos of nude people, while they are posing in urban locations around the world. All the models who pose naked for him do so voluntarily, and as a reward they receive a limited edition photo. His most recent installation was at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, where over 5,000 people bared all for him to photograph.

I discovered Tunick’s work while doing research on tourism in Sydney and decided to write an article on that particular event titled “Australia Gets Naked.” I was shocked to find out that he was born here in New York State, not too far from our office. It’s rumored that his interest in photography stemmed from a trip to London while attending Emerson College in Massachusetts. During that trip he took photographs of naked models at a bus stop in Southwark. According to his website, he has been “documenting the live nude figure in public” since 1992, four years after graduating from Emerson.

Spencer Tunick - New YorkTunick’s work isn’t without risk, he’s been arrested on multiple occasions for his art. One of his major events include Grand Central Station in New York, where 450 naked women posed for him. He actually settled for the MTA transit hub because previous requests for the Museum of Natural History and New York Public Library were denied.

While sifting through many articles on the web about the artist, it seems his largest event was in Barcelona back in 2003, where 7,000 people showed up to get naked for him. If you have any interest in signing up to pose for the artist, all you have to do is fill out a short form on the artist’s website. All the form asks for is an email address and things that would influence his pictures, such as your age, gender, and skin tone. There is also no restrictions as to weight or size. A pregnant woman was interviewed by many news stations in Australia for showing up as a model at the Sydney Opera House.
