Yesterday, Latin pop star Ricky Martin finally confirmed that he was gay. In a blog post, the 38 year old star answered the long asked question. The singer said one of the reasons why he kept his homosexuality hidden was because he was told by some in his entourage that it would hurt his career.

In 2000, Barbara Walters grilled him about whether he was gay, but he refused to answer the question. However in 2008, he used a surrogate mother to bare his two sons, Matteo and Valentino. In Martin’s post, he mentioned that it was his two new sons that inspired him to come out of the closet.

The Puerto Rican pop star hit his career peak in 1999, when his album went multi-platinum selling over 15 million copies. We don’t know what or if there will be consequences for his career, but Ricky’s website sure took a hit after the announcement. The news spread so fast that his website crashed after hundreds of people logged on to write comments of support to the pop star.
