California Earthquake
At 3:40pm yesterday, a powerful earthquake was recorded near Mexicali, California. The 7.2 magnitude quake was followed by a series of aftershocks between 3.0 to 5.0 magnitudes. So far there has only been one reported death, but there are scores of people who are trapped amongst the rubble of their homes.

The earthquake was the largest in the area for almost 20 years. Tremors were felt as far north as Santa Barbara and as far east as Palm Springs. In Los Angeles, there were reports of chandeliers swaying and glasses falling during Easter dinners. In San Diego, there were reports of shattered windows, broken pipes and water main breaks in private buildings, but there were no reports of injuries.

A USGS official said the quake was felt by almost 20 million people. In Tijuana, Mexico the quake lasted for about 40 seconds. It even caused buildings to sway and knocked out power in many parts of the city.
