The Pakistani cricket player was accused of attempted bigamy earlier today. Indian police seized the sports star’s passport after plans were announced to marry tennis star Sania Mirza. The issue came to light when another Indian woman, Ayesha Siddiqui, told reporters that Mr. Malik married her over the telephone in 2002.
Ms. Siddiqui claims that she has proof, she has a signed wedding certificate and records of the miscarriage of their child. The former captain of the Pakistani cricket team, admitted he did marry her over the phone and sign the certificate, yet he was tricked into it. His counter argument is that he never met her prior to the marriage and she sent him photographs of another, more attractive, woman claiming they were her own.
Last night, his supposed wife filed a police complaint against Mr. Malik, accusing him of cheating her, offering her money to keep quiet and threatening to kill her if she went public. Police said they had questioned him, while he has been staying at the Mirza family home, and confiscated his passport until they completed their investigations. Both superstars acknowledged that they will continue with the April 15 wedding, despite the controversy. However, lawyers for the Ms. Siddiqui are filing suit in Pakistan in hopes to stop the wedding from taking place.
