
According to the USGS, a 6.8 magnitude quake struck the coast of the Solomon Islands earlier today. At this time, there was no immediate tsunami alerts or reports of damage. The very strong earthquake occurred at 8:40pm local time.
The Solomon Islands is a country in Melanesia, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. The capital, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal. In September last year, a devastating tsunami swept along coasts in the Pacific islands of Samoa and Tonga, killing 186 people. In April 2007, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomon Islands, triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
