New Arizona Immigration Law

The state of Arizona has stirred up a lot of controversy this week about immigration law. Their Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, signed into law, legislation allowing police to arrest anyone believed to be an illegal immigrant. President Obama as well as Mexico’s President Calderon, were very upset about the actions the state has taken.

The Mexican government has reacted by warning it’s citizens who travel to or through Arizona, to be careful of this new legislation. Our government’s reactions were even worse. The US Attorney General, Eric Holder, is planning to sue the state to overturn it’s new law. Moreover, many Californian residents are outraged and are asking Governor Schwarzenegger to boycott doing business with the state.

If the law is not overturned, it will go into effect in about 90 days. The strange thing about all this, is that 70% of Arizona residents voted in favor for this law. Even stranger, at least a third of the states residents are Hispanic.

Many are speculating that one of the reasons Arizona residents are backing this law, is the 460,000 illegal immigrants that are supposedly living in the state. Moreover, there has been a huge spike in crimes and acts of violence due to the war against the Mexican drug cartels.

As reluctant as I am to support something that Sarah Palin also supports, I don’t think we should overturn the law. Personally, I believe we are assuming we know how it feels to live a state where drug violence is commonplace. It’s wrong to control Arizona’s freedom to protect it’s residents, regardless of how it looks in the political view.
