Due to a severe lightning storm passing through the New York region, MTA LIRR train service has been suspended on certain branches. Currently, the storm has passed Queens, so it is sunny in parts like Jamaica. However, there are reports of hail storms as close as New Hyde Park, which straddles the New York City and Long Island border. According to the agency’s website, the weather is wreaking havoc on their signal systems.
As of 4:38pm EST, service has been suspended on the Hempstead, Montauk, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and Ronkonkoma lines. Delays have also been reported on the Babylon and Port Washington lines. According to Weather.com maps, the severe thunderstorm should leave Long Island soon. However, radar maps are indicating another round of severe weather tomorrow, but in the Great Lakes region.
The other MTA rail agency, Metro-North, is running normally at the moment because their lines travel extend north of the city. To keep updated on the status of Long Island Rail Road server, visit the the LIRR website.
