Cure for Cancer?

June, M.D.According to papers published yesterday in Science Translational Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania cured leukemia in two out of three patients. This breakthrough treatment involves the genetic re-engineering of the patient’s T cells to fight off the cancer cells. If this new technique proves to be effective, it can be adapted to fight all forms of cancer. The primary men responsible for this breakthrough are medical doctors Carl June and David Porter. I’m not sure if these men were very popular back in high school, but I guarantee you they’re pretty famous today. At least 2 of these “Top 10 Techies” have had a movie made about their lives and how they came into to be the men they are today. According to the Forbes list of World Billionaires, there are currently 89 billionaires who have made their money through technology. Coincidentally, the US is home to 47 of these super rich techies. In fact, the US makes up 32% of the world’s 100 richest people, regardless of industry. Let’s quickly run through this list of entrepreneurs and college dropouts. (more…)

Terror Attack At Moscow Airport

Earlier today, there was an attack on their busiest airport at approximately 4:40pm Moscow time. Current speculations are saying there at least 32 confirmed deaths as a result of this horrible tragedy. The authorities have already begun searching for the group responsible. (more…)

Russian Oil Tanker Hijacked

Somali Pirate
Last night, Somali pirates hijacked a Russian oil tanker 550 miles off their country’s coast. The attack on the 106,000 ton tanker, name Moscow University, prompted Russian officials to send a warship to pursue the pirates and hopefully recover the lost oil. The Russian vessel’s records indicate it was carrying 23 crew members and hauling over $52 million in crude oil. (more…)

New Arizona Immigration Law

The state of Arizona has stirred up a lot of controversy this week about immigration law. Their Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, signed into law, legislation allowing police to arrest anyone believed to be an illegal immigrant. Oil Rig Explosion Leads to Spill

Last week, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig had a fatal accident, which caused the drilling platform to explode in the Gulf of Mexico. The only tragedy though to have come from this, were the deaths of the missing personnel. However, they did not see the environmental impacts of this explosion until now. (more…)

BP Oil Rig Explosion
Yesterday, there was a huge oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig, leased by energy giant BP, is still missing 12 members of it’s crew. Luckily, the coast guard reported that 98 of the 126 workers were safe and were on their way to shore. A further 17 had been flown to hospital after the explosion and 7 were critically injured. China Sterilizes Citizens

In an attempt to keep in line with the “one child per couple rule,” China plans to sterilize those whom have violated this birth control policy. Doctors in China have been ordered to sterilize about 10,000 of these violators, by force if necessary. About 1,300 people are being held in cramped conditions in towns across Puning county, in Guangdong Province, as officials try to put pressure on couples who have illegal children to come forward for sterilization. Strong 6.9 Quake Hits Qinghai China

Just a couple of hours ago, the USGS reported a 6.9 magnitude quake hit the southern region of Qinghai, China. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the remote rural area, though witnesses described houses quickly crumbling. The area near Tibet was was hit with a follow-up 5.8 magnitude quake. 6.3 Magnitude Quake in Spain

At around 6pm today, the USGS reported a 6.3 magnitude quake in Spain. The center of the quake struck just 15 miles south east of the city of Granada. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties on Spanish media. (more…)

Strong 6.8 Solomon Islands Quake

Solomon Islands Earthquake
According to the USGS, a 6.8 magnitude quake struck the coast of the Solomon Islands earlier today. At this time, there was no immediate tsunami alerts or reports of damage. The very strong earthquake occurred at 8:40pm local time. (more…)
