6.5 Quake Off Taiwan Coast

Yesterday, the USGS reported a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan waters. Luckily, the center of the quake was about 170 miles southeast of T’ai-Tung, Taiwan. The quake was powerful enough to shake buildings in Taipei. (more…)

Strong 6.9 Quake Hits Qinghai China

Qinghai China Earthquake
Just a couple of hours ago, the USGS reported a 6.9 magnitude quake hit the southern region of Qinghai, China. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the remote rural area, though witnesses described houses quickly crumbling. The area near Tibet was was hit with a follow-up 5.8 magnitude quake. 6.3 Magnitude Quake in Spain

At around 6pm today, the USGS reported a 6.3 magnitude quake in Spain. The center of the quake struck just 15 miles south east of the city of Granada. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties on Spanish media. (more…)

According to the USGS, a 6.8 magnitude quake struck the coast of the Solomon Islands earlier today. At this time, there was no immediate tsunami alerts or reports of damage. The very strong earthquake occurred at 8:40pm local time. (more…)

7.7 Quake Strikes Indonesia

Indonesia Earthquake
A huge earthquake hit the island of Sumatra in Indonesia yesterday afternoon. The 7.7 magnitude quake caused widespread panic, blackouts and triggered tsunami warnings in both Indonesia and Thailand. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties attributed to the quake. (more…)

Huge Earthquake Hits California

California Earthquake
At 3:40pm yesterday, a powerful earthquake was recorded near Mexicali, California. The 7.2 magnitude quake was followed by a series of aftershocks between 3.0 to 5.0 magnitudes. So far there has only been one reported death, but there are scores of people who are trapped amongst the rubble of their homes. (more…)

According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), the Phillipines was hit with a 6.0 magnitude earthquake early this morning. The center of the quake struck Mindoro, which is just over 100 km southwest of the capital city Manila. So far, there are no reports of major damage or tsunami warnings. (more…)

Chile Quake Tsunami Update

The 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile has claimed the lives of over 300 people. Although emergency agencies are still unable to tally the actual death toll, they are expecting it to increase significantly around Concepción, Chile’s second-largest city. The massive earthquake early this morning has killed at least 78 people so far. Sources say that the death toll could be more because the 8.8 magnitude quake also triggered a huge tsunami which is travelling at hundreds of kilometers per second. Although Chile is known to experience large tectonic movement, it is rare that they experience one over an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. (more…)

8.8 Earthquake on Coast of Chile

Chile Earthquake
At around 6:34 GMT, a severe earthquake was recorded off the coast of Chile somewhere in between Santiago and Puerto Montt. Sensors registered the quake as an 8.8 according to the USGS (United State Geological Survey). A tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, but there are no reports of any injuries from the massive quake yet. (more…)
