7.7 Quake Strikes Indonesia

Indonesia Earthquake
A huge earthquake hit the island of Sumatra in Indonesia yesterday afternoon. The 7.7 magnitude quake caused widespread panic, blackouts and triggered tsunami warnings in both Indonesia and Thailand. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties attributed to the quake. (more…)

Chile Quake Tsunami Update

USGS Chile Earthquake
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile has claimed the lives of over 300 people. Although emergency agencies are still unable to tally the actual death toll, they are expecting it to increase significantly around Concepción, Chile’s second-largest city. Earthquake In Chile Update – Deathtoll Rises

The massive earthquake early this morning has killed at least 78 people so far. Sources say that the death toll could be more because the 8.8 magnitude quake also triggered a huge tsunami which is travelling at hundreds of kilometers per second. Although Chile is known to experience large tectonic movement, it is rare that they experience one over an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. (more…)

8.8 Earthquake on Coast of Chile

Chile Earthquake
At around 6:34 GMT, a severe earthquake was recorded off the coast of Chile somewhere in between Santiago and Puerto Montt. Sensors registered the quake as an 8.8 according to the USGS (United State Geological Survey). A tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, but there are no reports of any injuries from the massive quake yet. (more…)
