LIRR Service Suspended Due to Weather

Due to a severe lightning storm passing through the New York region, MTA LIRR train service has been suspended on certain branches. Currently, the storm has passed Queens, so it is sunny in parts like Jamaica. However, there are reports of hail storms as close as New Hyde Park, which straddles the New York City and Long Island border. According to the agency’s website, the weather is wreaking havoc on their signal systems. (more…)

Mudslides in Brazil Kill 200

Last night, at least 200 people were buried alive in a mudslide near Rio de Janeiro. The Morro do Bumba slum of Niteroi, was built on mounds of rubbish accumulated over decades, making the ground unstable and vulnerable to collapse. The slide destroyed at least 50 homes and one church, which was said to have as many as 30 people inside. (more…)

Another Freak Storm Hits Australia

Hail Damage in Perth
Another freak storm hit Australia last night, leaving 160,000 residents of Perth without power. Hailstones, the size of golf balls and a huge amount rain, bombarded the city causing landslides and floods. Australian Premier Colin Barnett, has declared yesterday’s storm a natural disaster with the damage bill expected to rise into hundreds of millions of dollars. (more…)

Sandstorm Turns Beijing Orange

Sandstorm In Beijing China
A huge sandstorm hit Beijing, China this Saturday turning the sky an orange tint. This is one the strongest sandstorms recorded this year. The country’s expanding deserts have led to a rise in the storms, despite China’s planting of thousands of acres of vegetation in recent years. The worst sandstorm was reported in 2006 and dumped over 300,000 tons of sand on the city. (more…)

Snow In Spain Causes Massive Power Outage

Remember the back to back storms that rocked Washington D.C. and much of the east coast? Well, we’re not the only ones getting a lot of snow and weird weather this year. Yesterday, the north east region of Spain received so much snow, it knocked out power for almost 250,000 people. It caused chaos for travelers and tourists, shutting down over 40 roads, many of which are near the French and Spanish borders. (more…)

Landslides In Uganda, Over 100 Dead

Recently, Uganda has been experiencing sever weather conditions, which increase flooding in the region. The excess water has sparked landslides that has destroyed several roads and many bridges. On Monday night, there were reports of massive landslides that wiped out several villages around Mount Elgon. Since the search began, they have discovered at least 106 bodies from the mud. (more…)

Huge Storm Ravages France

France Storm
A massive storm ripped through Europe yesterday killing over 50 people so far. Approximately 45 victims perished in France, then there were three to four more deaths throughout Spain, Germany, & Portugal. snowstormnyc Yes, it’s true ladies and gentlemen, another snow storm is heading towards the east coast. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning from 10pm this evening until 6am EST Thursday. Snowfall in New York City is expected to be anywhere from 10 to 16 inches. (more…)

Snow Storm Shuts Down Washington D.C.

DC Snow Is it good or bad that this snow storm happened on the weekend of Super Bowl XLIV? Posted on February 7th, at 6pm, the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) announced the closing of all federal agencies in the Washington D.C. area. I think they all deserve a day of rest after having to dig themselves out of a foot or two of snow. (more…)

Snow Storm Brings Chaos to East Coast

Snow Storm When waking up this morning in New York, I knew the meteorologists called it right when I saw only a few inches on the floor outside. I had to check if the predictions of up to two feet of snow was true though. Not only did levels of snow reach two feet in certain parts of Virginia, but many area declared a state of emergency due to the power outages. From what information I can gather, a state of emergency has been declared in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland. (more…)
